Day 20 - 11th November 2016

Great sleep in!! Bed was awesome – the best of our trip! Poor Steve had a very upset tummy during the night, so his sleep was somewhat interrupted.

No, it wasn’t the schnapps that did it, but the croissants that he ate for dinner at 9pm – the ones we bought that morning around 9am, filled with cream and custard. They must have turned slightly during the 12 hours without refrigeration. That’ll teach him to save them for later….. I would have eaten them straight away!

Strangely enough, the Schnapps left no hang-over at all.  I would have expected a headache at least, but no, nothing!  Good for us!!

We had breakfast with Carlo at 9am. He bought out a huge plate of salami – mild and with chilli, with Chicken ham & some sort of proscuitto and cheese! Enough for a small army, they they were all so good, we ate most of it!

Then Carlo bought out some scrambled eggs with ham, and there was bread for toasting with enough jams to smother a whole army! Yoghurts and fruit. We had more than enough to eat. I made sure Steve had his fill, as he most likely wont eat properly again until we hit Lake Bled tomorrow afternoon.

Yes – Carlo did try and get us to have more Schnapps with breakfast! He thinks it is very funny now – but NO SCHNAPPS for me!! ha ha

The skies were dark and grey today and it had already rained a little bit, but we wanted to get to these waterfalls. Rain was due to settle in around lunchtime. We had worked out that we needed to be at Entrance 2, and catch the ferry across to P2. Its like 50m across the lake! So its a short ferry trip and then a few hundred meters walk or more – most likely uphill, but we will be close to where we need to be. We were excited.

So we drove to Entrance 1 and bought our entrance tickets which were 55 Krona each. We were greeted by a young cat with the most amazing exotic plush coat! She was a Tortie Tabby Bi Colour! Just gorgeous! We patted for a long while!

Then we drove to Entrance 2. Then we started to walk towards the Ferry. OMG – no one tells you exactly how much walking you will do. Just getting from the car down to the Ferry felt like 5km! I am sure it was only 1km, but it went on and on and on. Oh and it went down & down & down. So you know on the way out, it will be uphill all the way – ugh.

Off in the distance across the lake, I swear I could see our waterfall!! YAY – it does exist and we were in the right place!  Thats it there on the RHS.

We made it to the ferry, only to be told that NO – P2 is closed – no ferry going there today! OMFG – you have got to be kidding me!?? Arggghhhhh “it is not possible” the man said and then basically walked off when Steve was trying to ask him more questions.

We derived that the water level of the lake was quite high and most of these ferry docks sit very low – so they are basically submerged, so the ferry’s can’t dock. BUT we could see P2 and it was above the waterline. If we wanted to get there, we had to walk approx 6km to get there, and that was NOT going to happen. Especially when there was no guarantee of anything, plus the tree’s were all sticks and no colour. It wasn’t exactly making us excited, and certainly not excited enough to walk 6km. If it had been in full colour – there would have been no stopping me!

Here is how close P1 was to P2.   I would have swam if I didn't have the camera gear!

So we decided to jump on the ferry and take a trip across to P3. The lake was calm. The little falls we could see were right near P1 as we left – the rest of the trip was very bland. There was nothing at P3, only a souvenir shop and a cafe which was all but empty. It looks almost like a ghost town.

Someone's clearly ecstatic about today going to plan - NOT!

P1 where the Ferry's leave from in the Upper Lakes region.

Our Ferry!

P3 off in the distance.

From inside the Cafe looking out to the lake.  She's cold and damp and deserted!

We ordered a hot chocolate and it was not good….it was small and very bad. Come on Croatia – give us something!!! It was at this time that we decided we were over this damn lake and we were going to head back home.

So we waited for the next Ferry to come and we got back on board and headed back to P1. It rained all of the way,  & we were headed into the wind, so it was a very cold and wet trip back.

Just as we were getting close to P1, the ferry turned and went to P2 to pick up a load of people!! WTF!! Steve asked if we could get off, but NO – we were not allowed! For crying out loud – we were right there – Let us off!!!! ARGGHHHHHH!!!

We found out later that they were picking up a tour guide with a group. So if you were in a tour guide group, you could get wherever you wanted it seems.

More pissed off than ever we left! Took us a while, walking up all of those millions of steps steeply uphill!!   Was quite funny when you think about it...."we're leaving"...... 50mins later.... "we're still leaving"!  ha ha ha

We drove to a little town to a market where we got excited by all the different foods Croatia has. There is nothing more exciting that shopping in a foreign country! We loaded up on all kinds of chocolates and biscuits (yes, very healthy)!!

Steve found something special…. Nescafe Coconut Sachets!! OMG – I hope I can get these at home! I should have bought 10 boxes of the damn stuff. We will be on the look out for it before we leave Europe thats for sure – I’ll buy more if we can find it! Ha ha

On the way back Steve made me drive the Bambino….so I drove a Manual on the wrong side of the road, on the wrong side of the car in Croatia! It’s been a very long time since I had driven a manual and I did alright considering. It wasn’t anywhere near as bad as I thought it was going to be.

So back in our warm apartment and out of the rain, to test some of our newly purchased goodies. But my favourite biscuits are ones we bought when we were in Ortesei (mostly German style town) – german biscuits I am sure.

Honig-Lebkuchen-Stern. By Schulte. Honey Gingerbread biscuits covered in chocolate with rice crispies in the chocolate. YUMMMY!!! I must try and find these when we get home. But then again I will be on a very strict diet, so maybe I shouldn’t be looking for them! Ha ha ha

We have a few hours to kill before dinner. Fish again I think. No dinner for Steve, but he has a box of Jaffa Biscuits to eat, along with a lot of chocolate, so he’ll be fine. We plan on leaving here around 9am and hopefully making it to Lake Bled by 12.30pm – 1pm.

Croatia is nice. This time of year and on our visit we didn’t get it at its best. So our thoughts are somewhat jaded. We can see just how spectacular it would be in full Autumn Colour, and thats when I would come back here. Never in summer being 35 degrees with 15,000 tourists a day – no way. But in Autumn when the weather is starting to cool, and there is beauty everywhere you look. But for our visit now, its bleak and grey and there is absolutely nothing special going on here – not for our level of photography - but we might be a tad spoilt with the conditions we’ve had on this trip in Italy.

We were only here for 2 nights, so its not the end of the world, but if you had travelled all the way from Australia just for this, you’d be bitterly disappointed!

Thank god for Carlo – he’s made this trip to Croatia enjoyable and memorable for us!  We would come and stay with Carlo again!

Glad we came to experience it and to experience another country I never thought I’d ever visit. I would come back, but not for a long duration. 1 full day at the park would be more than enough. But 2 nights would give you half of an afternoon and the next full day. Enough to see the main sights. Having said that, in full autumn colour, you might need 2 weeks here to explore! Ha ha ha

We rested and caught up on the blog and then it was dinner time. Trout again, this time served with rice and vegetables and a bowl full of tomatoes and capsicum salad – delicious! But OMG – I have eaten so much, I can’t fit anything else in!!

Sorry for the very blurry photo - little camera was struggling in the low light.

"angry trout!"  lol

Carlo then bought out desert made by his Mother In Law. This desert was originated in Bosnia it is called RAHATLOKUM and the original flavour there would have been with Walnut. The Bosnian’s would eat this with Coffee.

It is just like Turkish Delight! Carlo did confirm that yes, the Turkish did have it first with the Rosewater, but in Bosnia they tweaked it with the Walnut.

Tonights Rahatlokum was with Vanilla! Very sweet, so you can only have a few pieces. It is delicious and so grateful that Carlo would share this with us. I have some to take away with us tomorrow when we leave!  Thanks Carlo!

Carlo bought out the Schnapps again!! It was that time of the night! OMG !!!

After a great night with Carlo it was time to go back to the apartment to our very comfortable bed, and to sleep.

Tomorrow we will leave at a reasonable time (around 8.30am) and I am hoping to take some photos in the forest on the way out (if it is not pouring with rain) and then we will arrive at Lake Bled for lunchtime or shortly after.  Our last night in Bled will co-incide with a Super Moon, whilst we do see super moons, this is the closest the moon has been to earth in the last 68 years!  And the moon should rise just behind the island on the lake - so if we are lucky we will get some amazing photos - fingers crossed!

Steve is getting excited as Slovenia is the Vanilla Slice capital of the World!! This is Steve’s most favourite desert! So I am expecting there to be many photos of him eating them over the next few days!!

Good night Croatia! Thank you for a short, but great experience!
